Slave Catchers, Pattyrollers, and the Police: The True Story Behind Policing in America

Did you know that policing dates back to slavery? To understand what is happening today, we must first look at the origins of policing. Now that everyone has a phone with a camera and access to social media, police brutality seems to be an emerging topic. However, police brutality happened long before Michael Brown and Rodney King. It is deeply rooted in American culture, dating back to slavery. If we want to have the conversation and promote real change, we must first establish the narrative, start with this course.

About the Course

For the last 400 years, black people have  been seen as less than human.  This false perception of black humanity has led to a countless, seemingly infinite number of instances in which the police have beaten us, terrorized us, destroyed our communities, held us against our will and left many of us unjustly incarcerated.

The Black History School would like to offer a course that helps you to understand the origins of policing in America, why black people have always been mistreated, and how the trauma we're seeing today links directly to slavery, Jim Crow, and hundreds of years of racial terror.

Noted black historian Aaron Johnson takes you back to centuries to slave patrols, black codes, and the foundation of modern police forces.  He also speaks to this story through a lense of blackness that you and your children will never find in America's racially-biased public school system.

If we don't understand our history, we can never understand our situation. This course will help you fill in the blanks and understand America like never before..

Aaron D. Johnson is a husband, father, educator, writer, and motivational speaker out of New York with over a decade of experience in education. He has been a teacher of Global History, Criminal Justice, Economics, and African American Studies. Aaron has been recognized by the New York State Assembly for his dedication to education and his students.

Mr. Johnson holds two bachelor’s degrees; one in History from Southern Connecticut State University and another in Adolescence Education with a concentration Social Studies for SUNY College at Old Westbury. He earned his master’s degree from SUNY Stony Brook University. He passionately believes in the importance of education.

The quote, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” by Malcolm X is one of his favorites. Aaron has acted on his zeal for education by pursuing and completing a postgraduate certificate of advanced studies in educational administration. And he is currently a doctoral candidate at St. John’s University focusing his studies on the enduring presence of racism in America’s schools. The Brian Tracy quote, “Commit yourself to lifelong learning. The most valuable asset you’ll ever have is your mind and what you put into it” encapsulates Aaron’s philosophy and embodies the message he transmits to his students.
“A hundred years ago they used to put on a white sheet and use a bloodhound against Negroes. Today they have taken off the white sheet and put on police uniforms and traded in the bloodhounds for police dogs, and they’re still doing the same thing.” Malcolm X
You have to know the forces that are against you and that are trying to break you down. We talk about the problems facing the black community: the decimation of the black family; the mass incarceration of the black man; we're talking about the brutality against black people from the police. The educational system. D'Angelo
